MASSAGE THERAPY FAQS
On your first visit, you will complete a health history questionnaire (which is confidential) as a part of your assessment. This will make the Massage Therapist aware of any medical conditions and/or medications you are currently taking. The Massage Therapist will then listen to your concerns, assess your individual needs and locate any other factors that could be contributing to the source of the problem. From that point, the Massage Therapist will develop a treatment plan for you, which will help you return to your normal, daily activities without any discomfort.

When it comes to treating the soft tissues of the body, there may be times when massage therapy can cause some minor discomfort, but it is not painful. This discomfort will diminish and the Registered Massage Therapist will make sure to be aware of your comfort levels at all times during the session. The client can stop and change the treatment at any time if any discomfort persists. If this is the case, the Massage Therapist will modify their methods to accommodate the needs of the client.

All Registered Massage Therapists are required to have photo ID cards, which are issued by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario – this card must have the registration number of the therapist. You are well within your right to view this ID card in order to be sure that you are visiting a Registered Massage Therapist.

Also, all members of the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario must be registered and be in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.

You do not have to get undressed for massage therapy. Your comfort is of utmost importance to us. Massage Therapists can provide the necessary treatment, whether you choose to remove any articles of clothing or not. All Registered Massage Therapists are trained in the proper draping techniques to ensure that your privacy is respected during the treatment. We want to ensure that you remain relaxed throughout the session, in order to make sure that the treatment is effective.

Massages typically last from 30 min to one hour. This includes an approximate five to ten-minute dressing time, and a quick and comprehensive health assessment to provide a safe, unique and personalized massage to your needs. Please note that dressing and assessment times can vary.

You can still have a massage when pregnant. You can receive massages from conception to birth. Massage during pregnancy provides a myriad of benefits such as:

  • Reducing stress, promoting relaxation and physical nurturing.
  • Reducing edema and blood pressure, relieving any varicose veins and increasing blood circulation.
  • Relieving stress on weight-bearing joints such as the ankles, low back and pelvis.
  • Reducing norepinephrine levels (stress hormones).
It is recommended to take at least thirty minutes of quiet time right after your treatment, to get to a peaceful physical and mental state. Another recommendation is to do an Epsom salt bath to help soothe and calm your muscles and to fully reap the benefits of the massage session. The Epsom salt bath will help alleviate any stiffness and aches you might feel the next day. Make sure to drink water and keep your tissues hydrated.

If you miss a massage session in one month, just make sure that you book a massage session before the end of your “massage term”. For example, if you miss a massage session, but you’ve booked ten massages in a twelve-month span, make sure you book all of your massages before the twelve months are up to ensure that you get the full benefits out of your plan.

After a massage, it is normal to feel a little tender and sore, especially if you did a deep tissue massage. If you do experience any muscle soreness, it should diminish after a day or two. For this reason, you don’t want to have a massage too frequently, because your body needs the time to rest and re-align itself between sessions.

There is no concrete evidence saying that it is possible to have too many massages, but most Massage Therapists recommend having around one massage a month (this may vary depending on the unique needs of the individual).

Yes, massage therapy is appropriate and suitable for people of all ages. However, there may be some conditions for which massage therapy is not the appropriate solution. In order to determine whether massage therapy is right for you, consult a Registered Massage Therapist to find out.
